The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Department of Geography stands as a primary pioneer, established as an independent undergraduate department in 1924 (Aligarh Muslim University, n.d.). Led by Major E. W. Dann (an Oxford graduate and first chairman), the department was the first of its kind in the Indian subcontinent and was later dubbed the “Mecca of Geography” by British geographers (Wikipedia, 2024).
Soon after, the Indian Geographical Society (IGS) was established in 1926 in Chennai (as the Madras Geographical Association), holding the distinction of being the oldest registered society (Indian Geographical Society, 2024). Founded by Prof. N. Subrahmanyam, it paved the way for professional geographical discourse in South Asia (University of Madras, 2023).
The Growth of National & Specialized Bodies (1960s – 1980s)
As the discipline matured, the need for a national umbrella organization led to the establishment of the National Association of Geographers, India (NAGI) in 1978 (NAGI, 2024).
